The first meeting of the National Consultation on the United Nations Post Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Project was held on Nov. 1, chaired by Ms. Zhang Xiaoan, Vice-President & Director-General of UNA-China, with participants from 28 government agencies, NGOs, academic institutions and foundations. The meeting reviewed the progress and challenges in implementing MDGs in China, discussed the objectives, principles and priority areas of Post MDGs for China.
The meeting emphasized the importance of developing the Post-MDGs which is believed to be another milestone and guiding document for international development and cooperation in the new era. As the largest developing country, China needs to participate in the Post-MDGs in an active manner so as to stocktake achievements of MDGs in China, integrate our national strategic goals into international development agenda and exert positive influence on the process.
The meeting exchanged preliminary views on China’s role in the Post-MDGs. We need to strike a balance between domestic interests and global concerns, short-term and long-term interests and international rights and obligations. We need to promote the understanding of scientific outlook on development, collectively address existing and new global development problems through international cooperation and promote fair, stable, balanced and sustainable development. We also need to ensure the inclusiveness, fairness and full participation and reflect the concerns of all stakeholders.
The meeting also exchanged views on the priority areas of the Post-MDGs and agreed UNA-China would take the lead in collaborating with UNDP China.
